Chesterton United Methodist Church: Where people find new life in Christ!

Children
Sunday Morning Worship for Children
We offer three worship services: at 8:15, 9:30 and 10:30. Children are always welcome in worship.

We do understand that some families find that their children benefit more from age appropriate worship service, so we also offer the following options every Sunday:

During the 8:15 worship service, children ages 3 through grade 4 may attend Children's Worship following "Moments for Young Disciples." Children's Worship is an optional program which is designed to follow our worship service but at a child's level of understanding. This program includes praise songs, praying, reading Bible verses, and also a "sermon."

"Moments for Young Disciples," a children's message, is included at 8:15 and 10:30. Parents may join a child up front if the child needs assurance.

Children's optional enrichment is provided during the 10:30 service for preschool and kindergarten age children, after the "Moments for Young Disciples."

Bible Journeys — (grades 1-4)
9:15 - 10:15 a.m.
Rooms 301-306 (top floor)

Children have different learning styles, so we use different methods of teaching. Our program is designed to present the biblical story, and its applications for the child's life, in a variety of ways — through music, art, storytelling, drama, computers, games, videos, cooking, and other activities.

Each year is divided into four-week units. During a unit, children will visit four workshops — a different one each week — which all focus on the same Bible story or theme.

Children begin each week in the "Gathering Space" area, with all age groups gathered briefly for sharing snacks. Then, each age group of children travels with their shepherd to a workshop until 10:15 a.m. The next week, all groups rotate to a different workshop.

Parents, please locate your child's workshop and pick up your child at 10:15. Weekly locations for each age group are posted at the doors of each workshop. All workshops are located on the top floor.

Other Programs for Children
Mom's Morning Out
Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon for children ages 18 months to 5 years. Cost $28 per child or $48 for 2 children from the same family. Registration forms can be picked up at the church office.

This program includes stories, crafts, games & snacks for the children. Moms, Dads or other caregivers can use this time for shopping, doctor appointments or whatever they need while their children socialize, learn about Jesus & are cared for in a loving environment.

Acolytes in Worship
Children (grades 4 through 6) are invited to light the candles during both worship services. They receive training for this meaningful service to God and our church.

Our Vision for Children's Ministries
To help children know God, grow in grace, and show God's love to others by:

  • Preparing and encouraging them to worship.
  • Providing exciting Bible learning experiences.
  • Demonstrating God's grace.
  • Providing opportunities for them to reach out to others in love.

Our Values
Child-centered: we evaluate all that we do from the child's perspective.
Safe: we want to create a safe physical, emotional, and spiritual environment.
Multi-sensory: we believe that children can be intelligent in many different ways. By appealing to different learning styles, we hope to reach every child in his/her best mode.
Relevant: we want the children to know the great Bible stories, but more importantly, we want them to apply the learning from each story to their lives.
Fun!!! Sunday School can be just as exciting as Vacation Bible School!!! Children need to know that being a Christian doesn't mean being bored!
